The “Vampire” Facelift
The vampire facelift is a procedure that has become increasingly popular, partly due to the traction that it has gained amongst celebrities. The treatment is based on injecting the patient with his or her own pale yellow blood plasma around the eyes and mouth. It comes from a similar technique used to promote healing after orthopedic surgery.
Unfortunately, despite some people claiming visible results, no independent studies have actually proven its cosmetic benefits. The treatment is also not actually a facelift, and its basis is in the belief that growth factors in plasma can stimulate collagen production in the face to reduce signs of aging.
Another issue with the treatment is that a vampire facial is often combined with a hyaluronic acid filler, such as Juvéderm. Because of the acid’s similar effects, it is difficult to determine which substance is actually creating the results. Plasma extraction is also very expensive and can quickly raise the price of the filler treatment.
